About Me

Education and Career

I have BSc(Hons) and MSc degrees in Mathematics from the University of Auckland and MA and PhD degrees in Statistics from the University of California at Berkeley.

After completing my degrees, I held teaching and research positions at Yale University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and then spent an extended stay at the University of Auckland.

I am perhaps best known as the co-creator of the R environment for data analysis and graphics and a founding member of the R Core Development Group and the R Foundation.

Awards

The 2008 Royal Society of New Zealand Pickering Medal for applications of technology.

The 2010 American Statistical Association Statistical Computing and Graphics award. (Jointly with Robert Gentleman.)

A Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2010 New Zealand Open Source Awards.

Consulting

I have forty years of consulting experience in market research, forecasting, statistical modelling and software development.

Most recently, I have developed forecasting systems for energy demand and also for product demand in warehouses.
